HABANICON E W Y O R K AND H A B A N A
Andres Levin is the founder of Habaníco travel. A self-described global resident, Andres was born in Caracas to Argentine parents. By age seven his family relocated to North Carolina, where Andres learned for his love of music. After education at Julliard, he eventually found himself in the studio with Nile Rodgers, and would venture into a career recording with such greats as John Legend, Mark Anthony, David Byrne, Caetano Veloso and Chaka Kahn.
By the late 1990s Andres and his wife CuCu Diamantes founded Yerba Buena, a 14 piece Afro-Cuban ensemble that would receive a Grammy nomination. Yerba Buena took Andres on a seven year run of frenetic world touring- throughout Latin America, Africa, and Europe – but it was in 1999 that he first set foot in Cuba and truly fell in love.
After a decade of traveling back and forth to the island , Andres and CuCu made the extremely bold endeavor to participate in Concierto de Paz Sin Fronteras, courageously set in Havana’s Plaza de la Revolución. At more than 1.5 million attendees, Paz Sin Fronteras remains the second largest concert in world history. From there the duo hit the road, traveling the lengths of Cuba while filming the experience.
In 2014 Andres assembled the first TedxHabana, a platform to bridge American and Cuban entrepreneurial innovation. Thanks to its tremendous impact, TedxHabana is one of the most anticipated annual events and employs hundreds of locals and hosts thousands of attendees. For Andres, the TedxHabana experience gave him a greater sense of what matters for Cubans and what is impactful for Americans.
After 17 Grammy nominations, including one win for his production of In The Heights, four Cuban films, contributions to Red Hot Cuba, and the launch of multiple nonprofits, Andres set forth into new frontier. His contacts from the music, film and intellectual realms had been looking to Andres to curate their personal and professional trips to Cuba. Before he knew it, he was connecting individuals to unique experiences and Cuban hospitality. Andres was serving as more than a producer of the arts; he is a producer of genuine life experiences. And from this, his travel concept was born.
